Our planet is not completely vertical, it is slightly tilted 23.5 degrees. One of the most supported theories of how this happened is that a long time ago the Earth got hit by an object large enough to change its position (This is what also created our Moon). This small change might not sound very important but thanks to this we have seasons. If the Earth was completely vertical one side of the Earth would be too hot at one time while the other would be too cold, potentially making it hard for life to take place on our planet. Source: NASA
